Specimen Requirements

Note: This test is also available as part of #1851 Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP),  #6961 Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP), and #6970 Renal Function Panel. See Common Panel Test Combinations in Special Instructions to avoid duplicate test requests when multiple panels are ordered.

 

Patient Preparation:

Fasting specimen is preferred but not required.

 

Specimen Type: Plasma

Container/Tube: Mint-green top (lithium heparin)

Specimen Volume: Full tube

 

Collection Instructions: Avoid prolonged venous stasis when drawing specimen.

STAT: 1 hour after receipt in laboratory 
Routine: 2 to 4 hours after receipt in laboratory

Reference Values

<1 year: 8.6-11.0 mg/dL
1-2 years: 8.6-10.7 mg/dL

>2 years: 8.5-10.3 mg/dL

Critical result (automatic call-back): ≤6.5 mg/dL or ≥14.0 mg/dL
