Methodology

Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
(PCR is utilized pursuant to a license agreement with Roche Molecular Systems, Inc.)

Specimen Requirements

Call Laboratory Medicine resident at digital pager 314-747-1320 for approval before obtaining the specimen.

 

Acceptable Specimens:

Blood: 1 lavender-top (EDTA) tube 

Nasopharyngeal (NP)  or ocular swab: 1 swab in viral transport medium
Respiratory (bronchial alveolar lavage, bronchial washing, nasal washing, sputum, tracheal aspirate): ≥1 mL in a leakproof screw-capped, sterile container

 

Stool: > 0.5 mL liquid or > 0.5 mg of soft in a leakproof screw-capped, sterile container

 

Urine: > 2 mL in a leakproof screw-capped, sterile container

 

 

Unacceptable Specimens:

Throat swabs, dry swabs, or swabs sent in bacterial transport medium

 

Collection Procedure:

Blood

1. Draw blood into tube. Avoid hemolysis.

2. Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient temperature only. Specimen cannot be frozen.

Note: 1. Specimen source is required.

2. Whole blood is required for testing. (Plasma or serum is not acceptable.)

 

Nasopharyngeal or Ocular Swab
1. Call Barnes-Jewish Hospital Laboratory Customer Service at 314-362-1470 to obtain Viral Transport Medium Collection Kit.

2. Collect specimen using wire shaft swab(s) provided.
3. Place swab(s) in vial, break or cut off shaft of swab(s), discard shaft, and tightly cap vial.
4. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.

5. If transport is delayed, refrigerate specimen. 
Note: Specimen source is required.

 

Respiratory (Bronchial Alveolar Lavage, Bronchial Washing, or Nasal Washing, Sputum, Tracheal Aspirate)  
1. Aseptically collect ≥1 mL of specimen.
2. Place in a leakproof screw-capped, sterile container.
3. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.

4. If transport is delayed, refrigerate specimen. 
Note: Specimen source is required.

 

 Stool:

1. Aseptically collect > 0.5 mL liquid or > 0.5 mg of soft specimen.
2. Place in a leakproof screw-capped, sterile container.
3. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.

4. If transport is delayed, refrigerate specimen. 
 Note: Specimen source is required.

 

Urine:

1. Aseptically collect > 2 mL of specimen.
2. Place in a leakproof screw-capped, sterile container.
3. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.

4. If transport is delayed, refrigerate specimen
