Test Code M605 Parasites, Schistosoma haematobium, Urine

Performing Laboratory

Barnes-Jewish Hospital Laboratory

Methodology

Wet Prep

Specimen Requirements

Acceptable Specimens:≥100 mL urine in a leakproof screw-capped, sterile container

Collection Procedure:

1. Aseptically collect ≥100 mL from a random urine, preferably collected between the hours of 1200 and 1500 (peak egg excretion time), or a 24-hour urine without preservatives.

2. Place specimen in a leakproof screw-capped, sterile container.
3. Send specimen at ambient temperature only. Do not refrigerate.
4. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.
Note: 1. Greater than 100 mL is required to allow concentration of the specimen by centrifugation and achieve greater sensitivity.
2. Refrigeration causes precipitates to form that make examination difficult.
