Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Plasma

Container/Tube: Mint-green top (lithium heparin)

Specimen Volume: Full tube

Collection Instructions:

1. Draw specimen prior to giving TRH.

2. Give a bolus of TRH (400-500 mcg intravenous bolus at 0-minutes).

3. Draw specimens at 20-minutes and at 30-minutes after the injection.

Additional Information:

1. Draw times are required.

2. Label specimens appropriately (corresponding draw times).

3. Test performed is #1723 TSH (Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone; Thyrotropin), Plasma.

Day(s) Test Set Up

Monday through Sunday

Turnaround Time:
STAT: 1 hour after receipt in laboratory
Routine: 2 to 4 hours after receipt in laboratory

Reference Values

Normal: a rise in TSH

Magnitude of the rise is dependent on the assay, but a rise of >2 mcIUnits/mL is generally considered to exclude hyperthyroidism.

Lack of normal response is sensitive but not specific for clinical hyperthyroidism. Slight increases in thyroid hormone levels (euthyroid patients with autonomous thyroid nodules) suppress the TSH response.
