The indirect test detects antibodies to platelets, including HLA antibodies in the patient’s serum. These patients may have been alloimmunized through pregnancy or transfusion, and may be refractory to platelet transfusions. Newborns of mothers with alloantibody may exhibit neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia.
