Specimen Requirements

Call Laboratory Medicine resident at digital pager 314-747-1320 for approval before drawing the specimen.

 

For patients with platelet counts <100,000/mm3

Specimen Type: Whole blood

Container/Tube: Yellow top (ACD-A) or (ACD-B)

Specimen Volume: 4 Full tubes

Specimen Minimum Volume: 4 full tubes

 

For patients with platelet counts >100,000/mm3

Specimen Type: Whole blood

Container/Tube: Yellow top (ACD-A) or (ACD B)

Specimen Volume: Full tube

Specimen Minimum Volume: 1 full tube

An interpretive report will be provided.
The direct test detects IgG on the patient’s platelets. Positive results may occur in collagen-vascular and hematologic lymphoma and lymphocytic leukemia. It may also occur with drug-induced thrombocytopenia, acute idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura, and in post-transfusion purpura. Occasionally, positive results may be seen in healthy individuals.
