Fixed Smears
Specimen Type: Bronchial, esophageal, or
gastric brushings
Container/Tube: Slide
Specimen Volume: Entire specimen
Collection Instructions:
1. Label frosted end of slide in pencil with patient’s first and last name, date of birth, and date of collection.
2. Gently roll brush over glass slide.
3. Fix slide immediately with spray fixative. Allow slide to dry.
4. Place slide in a slide mailer. Do not close mailer until slide has dried completely.
Liquid-Based Preparation
Specimen Type: Bronchial, esophageal, or
gastric brushings
Container/Tube: Vial of cytology fixative
Specimen Volume: Adequate specimen
Collection Instructions:
1. Remove brush head by snipping wire and drop brush into vial of cytology fixative.
2. Label vial with patient’s first and last name, date of birth, Social Security number, and type of specimen.
3. Ensure vial is tightly closed and place in a biohazard Ziplock bag.
