Test Code CY012 Cytology, Anal-Rectal Pap Test

Performing Laboratory

Barnes-Jewish Hospital Laboratory

Methodology

Barnes-Jewish Hospital offers ThinPrep Pap test and SurePath Pap test.

Note: Human Papillomavirus (HPV) detection may only be performed on ThinPrep Pap test specimens and at the request of the clinician, at an additional charge.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Anal-rectal

Container/Tube: ThinPrep or SurePath vial

Specimen Volume: Entire specimen

Collection Instructions:

1. Moisten plastic shaft Dacron swab with tap water.

2. Insert swab about 5 cm to 6 cm into anal canal past anal verge, into rectal vault. This is done without direct visualization of anal canal.

3. Apply firm lateral pressure to swab handle as it is rotated and slowly withdrawn from anal canal, inscribing a cone-shaped arc. Care should be taken to ensure that the transition zone is sampled. Avoid using cotton swabs or wooden stick because handle may break and splinter during collection.

4. Place swab in preservative (ThinPrep or SurePath) vial and agitate vigorously several times to release cellular harvest.
5. Label vial with patient’s first and last name, date of birth, and date of collection.
6. Ensure vial is tightly closed and place in a biohazard Ziplock bag.
