Transferrin is an iron-binding protein (beta-globulin) present in human serum. Transferrin binds and transports ferric iron, and more than 99% of the total serum iron is bound to about one third of the transferrin pool. Because its half-life is shorter and the size of the body pool is smaller for transferrin than for albumin, transferrin is more likely to respond to protein depletion before serum albumin. Other factors affecting transferrin concentration include anemia, iron deficiency, liver disorders, neoplastic disease, and nephrotic syndrome.
