Methodology

Note: Test searches for the presence of the 14-3-3 protein.Tau Protein and RT-QuIC tests are also included in this panel.  The 14-3-3 protein is a marker for some prion diseases, such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), when a number of other neurodegenerative conditions are excluded.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)

Container/Tube: Screw-capped, plastic vial

See Body Fluid Collection Guidlines under Special Instructions.

Specimen Volume: 2-5 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. Obtain CSF by lumbar puncture.

2. Discard the first 2 mL of CSF that flows from the tap.

3. Collect 2 mL to 5 mL of CSF, avoiding bloody tap.

4. Forward promptly on ice.
Additional Information: Include relevant clinical information, name, phone number, mailing address, and e-mail address (if applicable) of ordering physician.
