Package insert: Glucose/HK GLUC3, Roche Corporation, 03/2023.
Specimen Requirements
Note: This test is also available as part of LAB15 Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP), LAB17 Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP), and LAB19 Renal Function Panel.
Patient Preparation:
Eating affects results. Be sure to determine which specimen is required; fasting (>8 hours) or random (after meal).
Specimen Type: Plasma
Container/Tube: Grey top (potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride)
Specimen Volume: Full tube
Additional Information: Fasting and glucose tolerance/challenge specimens must be drawn in a grey top tube. Random glucose specimens may be drawn in either a grey top tube or a mint-green top tube.
Day(s) Test Set Up
Monday through Sunday
Turnaround Time:
STAT: 1 hour after receipt in laboratory
Routine: 2 to 4 hours after receipt in laboratory
Test Classification and CPT Coding

Reference Values
Dependent on time from last meal
Fasting:
0-3 days: 50-99 mg/dL
> 3 days: 70-99 mg/dL
Random:
0 - 3 days: 50-110 mg/dL
> 3 days: 70-199 mg/dL
Critical result (automatic call-back):
0-3 days: ≤ 44 mg/dL or ≥ 450 mg/dL
> 3 days: ≤ 54 mg/dL or ≥ 450 mg/dL
Note: Either a fasting plasma glucose >126 mg/dL or a random glucose >200 mg/dL plus symptoms is diagnostic for diabetes when confirmed on another day. Fasting values >100 mg/dL but <126 mg/dL are diagnostic for impaired fasting glucose.
