Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Whole blood

Container/Tube: Lavender top (EDTA)-Pink-top (EDTA) tube is not acceptable.

Specimen Volume: Full tube

Collection Instructions: Immediately invert several times to mix blood

Physician alert values:

Bone Marrow Transplant Inpatients: < 10,000 K/cumm.  BMT alert platelet counts are called each time.

Non-BMT Inpatients: <20 K/cumm and >1,000,000 K/cumm. 

Inpatient alert values < 20 K/cumm are called each time. 

Inpatient platelet counts > 1,000,000 K/cumm are called the first time and if consistent, resulted as “Consistent with previous” for 30 days.

Outpatients: <50 K/cumm and >1,000,000 K/cumm. Outpatient alerts are called each time.
