Test Code Test Code LAB7016 Tissue and Bone Culture
Infectious
Performing Laboratory
Barnes-Jewish Hospital Laboratory
Methodology
Gram stains are routinely performed on the following specimens: aspirate, bone, lymph node, tissue. Because culture is more sensitive than Gram stain, the Gram stain is only offered in combination with a culture request.
Specimen Requirements
Acceptable Specimens:
≥1g in leakproof, screw-capped, sterile container, or >1g in anaerobic transport device
Collection Procedure:
1. Aseptically collect ≥2 g of specimen and place >1g in a leakproof, screw-capped, sterile container and >1g in an anaerobic transport device. Because there may be rare viable organisms, specimens must be large enough to permit their recovery.
2. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.
