Specimen Requirements
Specimen Type: Urine, random collection
Container/Tube
Preferred: A clean, plastic urine container(s) with no preservative.
Acceptable: Clean, screw-cap container with no preservative.
Collection Volume: 6.0 mL (minimum 4.0 mL)
Patient Preparation: None
Sample Rejection:
Specimens collected with acid as preservative.
Mislabeled or unlabeled specimens.
Special Instructions: If sending specimen to lab from outside facility, place urine in a 10 mL screw-cap plastic transport vial and freeze.
Call Laboratory Medicine resident at digital pager 314-747-1320 for approval before drawing the specimen.
24-Hour Collection
Submit an entire 24-hour urine collection in a plain, brown urine container.
Additional Information:
1. Starting and ending times of collection are required.
2. Follow instructions for Urine Collection in Special Instructions.
3. Urine timed measurement is performed at an additional charge per 24-hour collection (CPT Code-81050).
Random Collection
See Specimen Required.
Interpretive
Reference Range: Interpretation report provided
Critical Values: None established
Limitations: Patients on MCT (medium chain triglyceride) oil exhibit a pattern consistent with that seen in MCAD deficiency. Any patient showing significant peaks of adipate, sebacate, and suberate should be investigated for MCT oil.
Methodology: Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS)
Additional Information
For SLCH Laboratory use only
Lab Processing instructions: Mix specimen well and aliquot sample into a 10 mL screw-cap urine tube for testing. Place original collection container (with or without any remaining sample) in freezer #1. Give aliquot to Chem COBAS bench and let them know they have Met Genetics specimen that needs to be frozen post analysis.
Processed Volume: 6.0 mL (minimum 4.0 mL) urine
NO SPECIMEN SHOULD BE REJECTED FOR VOLUME BUT PLEASE CALL FLOOR TO NOTIFY NURSE THAT ADDITIONAL SPECIMEN IS NEEDED and SHOULD BE COLLECTED AND SENT TO LAB TO ADD TO WHAT IS IN LAB! GIVE ALL SPECIMENS TO METABOLIC GENETICS TO DECIDE IF QNS.
Analyte Stability:
Ambient: NA
Refrigerated: NA
Frozen: NA
NOTE: Creatinine performed on receipt. Entire collection then frozen.
NOTES: Give specimen to chemistry bench to run Creat prior to freezing.
If specimen needs to be shared with UA bench make sure they are aware that specimen is shared and original container needs to be placed in MetGen basket in freezer.
