Immunofixation Electrophoresis, Serum
Important Note
Beginning December 10, 2019 Barnes Jewish Hospital (BJH) will begin a new method, called Immunotyping, for some (not all) samples that require immunofixation. Please order IMMUNOTYPING.
Immunotyping is based on the principle of capillary electrophoresis in free solution. This is the same method currently used, by MoBap & BJH, for Serum Protein electrophoresis (SPEP). Proteins are separated in silica capillaries by their electrophoretic mobility and electroosmotic flow at high voltage in an alkaline buffer. Proteins are directly detected during migration by UV absorbance.
Immunotyping is fully automated and provides a faster run time than immunofixation. The method used will appear as immunofixation or immunotyping in the electronic medical record, depending on which method was used. The interpretations will remain the same as immunofixation.
If you have any questions about this new method, please don’t hesitate to contact the laboratory.
