Reference Values

PLA1 is a platelet antigen that is found in 98% of the general population. Sensitization to FLA1 in PLA1-negative individuals accounts for more than half of cases of neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia purpura (NATP) and posttransfusion purpura (PTP).

A negative PLA1 antigen typing and a positive indirect platelet antibody in a recently delivered mother coinciding with a low platelet count in the newborn without other clinical causes, may indicate NATP. If platelet transfusion is necessary, maternal platelets may be transfused.
